Opportunities From: Shatterproof

Volunteer: Arizona Advocacy Opportunity: Help Remove Barriers to Life‑Saving Treatment

Shatterproof is mobilizing supporters in Arizona to engage in a time-sensitive advocacy opportunity for those who are interested to consider lending their voice to support the removal of prior authorization requirements for all long‑acting injectable medications, helping ensure timely, equitable access to life‑saving treatment.

Arizona Medicaid (AHCCCS) is reviewing access to long‑acting injectable medications used to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). These medications are supported by strong clinical evidence, yet some currently require prior authorization - while daily oral medications do not.

Why This Matters

Prior authorization requirements can create real barriers for people seeking treatment - especially during vulnerable moments in recovery. These barriers may include:

Delays in starting or continuing medication Additional clinic visits that aren’t always feasible Disruptions that increase the risk of relapse or disengagement from care

Long‑acting injectable medications are evidence‑based and can be especially helpful for people who benefit from consistent dosing without the burden of daily medication management. Removing unnecessary administrative hurdles helps ensure that treatment decisions are driven by patient needs and clinical judgment - not paperwork delays.

This advocacy effort focused solely on improving access to evidence‑based care for Medicaid patients in Arizona.

Ways to Take Action Right Now

AHCCCS is accepting public input ahead of its Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee meeting on May 19 (virtual). Interested advocates can participate in one of two ways:

Submit written public comments, or Provide oral testimony during the virtual meeting

Participation is especially impactful from individuals with:

Lived experience with OUD or AUD Experience navigating treatment delays or prior authorization Professional or caregiving experience in addiction treatment or recovery support

Important timing note: To ensure participation, registration or written comments should be submitted by May 3.

Action / support links:

Public Testimony Registration Form Conflict of Interest Form (if applicable) Additional process detailsWhat Signing Up Means

Volunteer: California Advocacy: Building Momentum After AB 2343

Check-out all of the Shatterproof California advocacy related progress updates and upcoming opportunities here!Advocacy Update: AB 2343 Milestone Reached

We’re excited to share a major win - Assembly Bill 2343 passed unanimously out of the Assembly Health Committee. This is a critical milestone toward ensuring that when people seek addiction treatment, they can access clear, reliable information about the quality of care they’ll receive.

This progress would not have been possible without our community. Over the past several weeks, volunteers:

Submitted written testimony Signed petitions Shared personal stories Testified in person at the Capitol

Your voices helped bring urgency, clarity, and humanity into the room - and lawmakers listened.

What’s Next: Protecting Critical California Programs Through Funding

With AB 2343 advancing, our California advocacy focus is now shifting to an urgent state funding priority.

If funding is not approved, Shatterproof will be forced to wind down two critically important programs serving the California community:

Treatment Atlas UnshameCA

These programs provide essential support, transparency, and stigma‑reduction for people and families navigating addiction and recovery. Ensuring continued funding is crucial to protecting this impact.

How You Can Stay Engaged

Upcoming opportunities will focus on in‑person advocacy in Sacramento, including meetings, visibility moments, and direct engagement with decision‑makers.

Whether or not you live in Sacramento, we need our activists:

Some opportunities will involve being physically present Others may include story sharing, preparation support, or coordination ahead of key moments Raise your hand now so we know you’re open to engaging as in‑person opportunities are activated.

By signing up, you’ll receive timely updates and clear guidance when action is needed.

Together, we’re building momentum - and ensuring that progress doesn’t stop here.

Thank you for showing up, raising your voice, and continuing this work with us.
