Description

NOTE: This is a leadership-focused volunteer role. Volunteers should be comfortable welcoming and engaging participants throughout the event and may be asked to connect with the Shatterproof team prior to Walk Day to review responsibilities and expectations.

Help ensure no one experiences the Walk alone. As the Shatterproof Community Team Captain, you'll help create a welcoming, inclusive, and mission-centered experience for participants on Walk Day. This leadership role is ideal for someone who is passionate about connection, community, and supporting individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder.

The Community Team serves as a gathering place for participants who may be attending the Walk on their own, participating for the first time, newly in recovery, not yet ready to share their story, or simply looking for a sense of belonging. As Team Captain, you'll welcome participants, foster connections, provide encouragement, and help guide people through meaningful moments of the Walk experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Welcome and engage Community Team participants throughout the event
  • Help create a supportive, inclusive, and stigma-free environment
  • Facilitate connections among participants and encourage community-building
  • Share information about Shatterproof's mission and Walk Day experiences
  • Work alongside Shatterproof staff to ensure participants feel informed, supported, and included
  • Foster a positive and memorable experience that inspires ongoing engagement with the mission

Ideal Volunteer:

  • Friendly and approachable
  • Comfortable initiating conversations and welcoming new people
  • Passionate about building community and supporting others
  • Has a strong understanding of, or willingness to learn about, Shatterproof's mission
  • Able to create a warm and inclusive atmosphere for people with diverse experiences and backgrounds

More About the NYC Community Team

The NYC Community Team exists to ensure that no one has to experience the Shatterproof Walk alone. It is a welcoming space where participants can connect, find support, and walk alongside others who believe in hope, healing, and recovery.

Whether someone is attending their first Walk, participating on their own, new to recovery, or simply looking for connection, this team provides a place to belong. There is no expectation to share a personal story. Together, we are building a world where addiction never defines or ends a life.
